How to Recycle Your Real Christmas Tree

An easy way to add the environment to your gift list this holiday season is to use a Real Christmas Tree as part of your celebrations. This renewable, recyclable resource gives a gift to the Earth that keeps on giving for years to come. Now consumers can access local Christmas Tree recycling information by entering their zip code at the NCTA web site www.realchristmastrees.org or at the EARTH911 web site www.florida.earth911.org, they can also call 1-800-CLEANUP. Among other services, EARTH 911 is a “clearinghouse” of recycling information (locations, contacts, dates, etc.) for all kinds of materials from used motor oil to Real Christmas Trees.

Many communities chip the trees into mulch for use on gardens, parks, hiking trails, playground areas, animal stalls and landscaping. Whole Christmas Trees are used for river shoreline stabilization, beach erosion prevention, marshland sedimentation, fish habitat, winter garden decorations, wild bird feeders and even hazardous materials cleanups. Even the trees that are not used in a specific program are all ultimately recycled back into nature since Real Christmas Trees are 100% biodegradable. Most artificial trees, on the other hand, are made overseas from petroleum products, cannot be recycled, and provide no benefit to the environment.

Nearly 98% of Real Christmas Trees are grown on farms as a crop just like corn, wheat or pumpkins. However, Christmas Trees can take between four and fifteen years to grow large enough to harvest. Smaller trees are left in the field for a future harvest. According to the National Christmas Tree Association (NCTA) for every tree harvested, up to three more are planted the following year. Unlike other crops, there are always large numbers of Christmas Trees in the field all year. Earlier this year, Christmas Tree farmers across North America planted over 65 million seedlings.

We are located at 3325 Treiman Blvd. (US 301), Dade City, FL 33523. Just 8 miles north of Dade City.

From I-75 take exit #301 (US 98/SR 50) 5 miles east to Treiman Blvd. (US 301) then south (right) on Treiman Blvd. (US 301) for 2 miles.
